To: Area Contractors From: SMBA Staff on Behalf of Kalamazoo County Department of Health and Community Services Environmental Health Division Date: 3/15/2022 Re: New Well & Septic Reporting Requirements to Obtain a Certificate of Occupancy
The Kalamazoo County Department of Health and Community Services – Environmental Health Division (“HCS-EHD”) oversees the approval and inspection of private septic and well installations and alterations. The HCS-EHD is seeking to better coordinate with building departments in their jurisdiction to ensure that septic and well installations are inspected and approved prior to the issuance of a certificate of occupancy or demolition permit.
Effective immediately, contractors will be required to submit copies of the septic and/or well inspection approvals from the HCS-EHD before a certificate of occupancy will be granted. This does not apply to projects which connect to public water and/or public sewer.
Additional information can be found by contacting the Environmental Health Division:
To: Area Contractors From: Southwest Michigan Building Authority Staff Date: March 9, 2022 Re: Code Source / Robert “Bob” Bush
We are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Robert Bush, founder of Code Source P.C., who performed a number of plan reviews for Southwest Michigan Building Authority. He will be deeply missed by our staff members and the code community at large.
The Authority is currently evaluating our options for plan review services going forward, and we ask simply for patience as we work to reconcile all the implications of this loss.
If you were working with Code Source on a review and have not already been contacted by our office, please get in touch as soon as possible so that we can investigate the status of the review.
More information will be provided as it becomes available.
The 2018 Michigan Plumbing Code has been adopted by the State of Michigan effective September 15, 2021. The Michigan Plumbing Code applies to non-residential occupancies. Residential requirements are contained in the Michigan Residential Code.

To facilitate this change, SMBA is releasing updated revisions for our application forms. The updated forms can be found on the applications & forms page.
We will be allowing some flexibility for a couple of weeks as a transition period, but after that time we will be rejecting incomplete applications. Please contact our office via phone, email, or our contact form with any questions. Thank you!
